John’s birth made news for its uniqueness and the miraculous events that surrounded it. People were surprised by the choice of a strange name for him, a name that had no association with anyone in his ancestry. “What will this child be?” they wondered.
Every child is a unique and miraculous creation and every birth should make us wonder. A child has links with its ancestry, but it comes as a bundle of new possibilities and with an identity of its own. It comes through its parents, but is not destined for the past, but for the future. It takes a route that has not been travelled by others in the past and will not be travelled by anyone in future—a child has a path of its own, directed toward God.
Rabindranath Tagore wrote: “Every child comes with the message that God has not given up on human beings.” Every child should make us wonder: “What will this child be?”
