In this story, like yesterday’s, Mark is giving us evidence of extraordinary power on the part of Jesus: only God can forgive sin. Our sheer existence is received, moment by moment, from God. Likewise, only God can reach down to the very roots of our being to heal them. Perhaps this is why there is always something unconvincing about the ‘self-made man’; we feel that his success is according to the terms of his ego, and therefore at any moment there could be a sudden manifestation of ugliness, if we accidentally touch some sore spot. To be no threat at all to others, but rather a vehicle of goodness, we have to have experienced this deepest healing of the roots of our own being: forgiveness.
