John the Baptist’s awareness of his own identity emerges from his awareness of who Christ is and how he is related to Christ. Christ is the Lord; John is meant to be the voice preparing the way of the Lord. In other words, knowing who Christ is helps John recognize who he is and who he is not; what he should do and what he should not.
How is the knowledge of Christ helping you to recognize who you are and what you should do? In relation to the Lord, what are you—a voice, a mirror, a prophet, a servant, a sower, a bridge . . .? Today, identify an image for yourself that would best describe your identity in and relationship with Christ. Preferably discuss the chosen image with a friend in faith.
