5° Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario – 4 de febrero de 2018 – Año B
El mal existe, pero no es invencible
Introducción
Hacia el año 2.200 a.C., fue compuesto en Egipto el célebre Diálogo de un desesperado con su alma, un monólogo en que el protagonista, destruido por una tragedia personal, piensa en el suicidio: “Hoy –confiesa– la muerte está delante de mí como la curación para el enfermo, como la libertad para el prisionero, como perfume de mirra, como el placer de quien se sienta bajo una palmera en un día en que corre una fresca brisa”. Estamos en los albores de la literatura egipcia e inmediatamente aflora el angustioso problema del dolor. ¿Por qué está destinado el hombre a sufrir?
La respuesta tradicional de Israel a este enigma es la doctrina de la retribución que Elifaz, amigo de Job, sintetiza así: “¿Recuerdas a un inocente que haya perecido? ¿Dónde se ha visto un justo exterminado? Mi experiencia es ésta: los que cultivan maldad y siembran miseria, eso mismo cosechan” (Job 4,7-8). Sin embargo, la vida desmiente sin piedad este dogma de la fe judía, poniendo en evidencia su ingenuidad, su aspecto provocativo y la insolencia con respecto al que sufre.
Culpabilizar al hombre haciendo referencia al relato del así llamado pecado original es igualmente insostenible. Hablar de pedagogía de Dios que hace madurar a sus hijos a través del dolor, ha sido definido como “sadismo teológico”, ideado por quien no se ha dado cuenta del mal horrendo que golpea a los inocentes. Y, además: ¿Quién ha dicho que el dolor humaniza?
Dar explicaciones teóricas a este grito existencial equivale a “impartir una lección de higiene alimenticia a quien se está muriendo de hambre y de sed”.
Jesús no se ha dejado atrapar en disquisiciones teóricas sobre el dolor, ha propuesto la solución: el mal existe y no hay que explicarlo sino combatirlo.

Primera Lectura: Job 7,1-4.6-7
7,1: La vida del hombre en la tierra es como un servicio militar, sus días son los de un jornalero: 7,2: como el esclavo, suspira por la sombra, como el jornalero, espera el salario. 7,3: Mi herencia son meses vacíos, me han sido asignadas noches de sufrimiento. 7,4: Al acostarme pienso: ¿Cuándo me levantaré?; se hace larga la noche y me canso de dar vueltas hasta el alba; 7,6: Mis días corren más que la lanzadera del telar y se consumen sin esperanza. 7,7: Recuerda que mi vida es un soplo y que mis ojos no verán más la dicha. – Palabra de Dios
La historia de Job está ambientada en un país exótico del Medio Oriente. El protagonista es un siervo de Dios, antes rico y feliz y ahora repentinamente golpeado por la desventura: pierde a los hijos, los bienes, la salud; está afligido por una llaga purulenta maligna que le cubre desde la planta de los pies hasta la coronilla y, sentado en las cenizas, busca alivio refregándose con un pedazo de arcilla. Hasta a su mujer le produce asco, la cual, dando libre desahogo a su incontenible rabia, le grita: “¿Todavía persistes en tu honradez? Maldice a Dios y muérete” (Job 2,9).
Este es el preludio, el resto del libro es un apasionado debate entre Job y cuatro amigos suyos llegados de Edón y del Oriente, países considerados como patria de la sabiduría.
Sobre el tema del dolor, por tanto, Job se enfrenta a todas las sabidurías de los hombres y, con una lucidez y carga pasional que no tienen parangón en la literatura universal, destruye una tras otra todas las explicaciones de la teología tradicional, es más, se burla de ellas…y con razón.
Job es un personaje fascinante y, como el Qohelet, siempre más querido y respetado.
La lectura de hoy contiene su célebre reflexión sobre la condición del hombre sobre la tierra: la vida no es otra cosa que dolor, el hombre es un esclavo sometido a incontables sacrificios de los que no recibe ninguna ventaja; es un jornalero que se afana desde el alba hasta la puesta del sol en un campo que no es suyo, soportando los ardores del sol en la angustiosa espera de que llegue la tarde añorada (vv. 2-3).
Job se considera a sí mismo más desventurado incluso que el esclavo, más infeliz que el jornalero. Éstos le parecen privilegiados: durante las horas nocturnas reposan de sus fatigas, mientras que él ni siquiera en el sueño encuentra alivio. Presa del dolor, se agita y se revuelve en su lecho hasta el amanecer (v. 4).
La esperanza de un cambio de su condición, es una quimera, una vana ilusión; los años transcurren veloces, pasan como un suspiro y a él no le queda otra cosa que concluir desconsolado: “Mis ojos no verán más la dicha” (vv. 6-8).
¿Por qué Dios lo ha puesto en una situación tan desesperada? ¿Por qué Dios lo ha hecho nacer, si en la vida le esperaban solamente desgracias? Job no es un resignado, no sufre en silencio, desahoga su dolor ante el Señor y le pide cuentas de las desventuras a que está obligado a soportar; su grito casi nos da miedo, parece un grito de rebelión, una blasfemia. Sin embargo, es oración.
La lengua hebrea tiene trece términos para indicar la oración; tres de ellos muestran formas progresivas de súplica a Dios. En el primer escalón, el más bajo, encontramos la oración expresada con palabras; es la más simple, la más común, surge del corazón del hombre y llega al corazón de Dios. Un escalón más arriba está el grito que constituye una invocación todavía más eficaz. En el tercer nivel se sitúa la más irresistible de las peticiones de ayuda al Señor: el llanto. Los rabinos enseñaban: “no hay puerta que las lágrimas no puedan abrir” y el salmista oraba: “Escucha mi súplica, Señor, atiende a mi clamor, no seas sordo a mi llanto” (Sal 39,13).
Frente al mal, no se nos pide la resignación, el hombre puede y debe gritar contra el escándalo, tiene el derecho de decirle a Dios que no comprende el por qué lo ha creado amante de la vida y de la alegría para colocarlo, después, en un mundo de dolor y de muerte.
La oración de Job está hecha de gritos y de lágrimas. Quien llora y grita el propio dolor, aunque no se dé cuenta, está invocando a Dios, está pidiéndole luz y fuerza.
Segunda Lectura: 1 Corintios 9,16-19.22-23
9,16: Anunciar la Buena Noticia no es para mí motivo de orgullo, sino una obligación a la que no puedo renunciar. ¡Ay de mí si no anuncio la Buena Noticia! 9,17: Si lo hiciera por propia iniciativa, recibiría mi salario; pero si no lo hago por propia voluntad, es que me han confiado una administración. 9,18: ¿Cuál será, entonces, mi salario? Anunciar gratuitamente la Buena Noticia sin hacer uso del derecho que su anuncio me confiere. 9,19: Siendo del todo libre, me hice esclavo de todos para ganar al mayor número posible. 9,22: Me hice débil con los débiles para ganar a los débiles. Me hice todo a todos para salvar por lo menos a algunos. 9,23: Y todo lo hago por la Buena Noticia, para participar de ella. – Palabra de Dios
El mayor servicio que se le puede hacer a una persona es anunciarle el Evangelio, palabra divina que convierte las mentes y los corazones y comunica un impulso de vida. Consciente de esta verdad, alguien puede tomar incluso la decisión de dedicar toda su vida a esta misión. Pero, ¿quién le dará, sin embargo, lo necesario para vivir?
La pregunta es legítima y Jesús ha dado la respuesta: “No anden buscando qué comer o qué beber; no se angustien. Todo eso busca ansiosamente la gente del mundo. El Padre sabe que ustedes tienen necesidad de ello. Basta que busquen su reino y lo demás lo recibirán por añadidura” (Lc 12,29-31). La experiencia de los discípulos confirmaron la verdad de las palabras del Maestro cuando, un día, éste les preguntó: “Cuando los envié sin bolsa ni alforja ni sandalias, ¿les faltó algo? Contestaron: Nada” (Lc 22,35).
Escribiendo a los corintios, Pablo retoma el argumento y llama la atención de los cristianos acerca de la obligación de mantener a los apóstoles: “Del mismo modo el Señor dispuso que los que anuncian la Buena Noticia vivan de su predicación” (1 Cor 9,14), como también Jesús ha enseñado: “El trabajador tiene derecho a su sustento” (Mt 10,10).
En la práctica, sin embargo, no es siempre fácil aplicar este principio porque, a causa de la debilidad humana, pueden surgir abusos. Alguno se puede servir de este derecho para enriquecerse, adquirir privilegios, conducir una vida desahogada. Existe también el peligro de que los responsables de la comunidad se comporten como “funcionarios de lo sagrado” y desarrollen su ministerio no con la pasión, la generosidad y el desinterés de quien está verdaderamente enamorado del evangelio, sino como empleados que trabajan en vistas al salario. Cuando se registran comportamientos semejantes, aun los predicadores más elocuentes y preparados pierden la credibilidad; por esto Jesús recomienda, es más, manda a sus discípulos: “gratuitamente han recibido, gratuitamente deben dar” (Mt 10,8).
Para obviar estos riesgos, Pablo afirma que, en ciertas situaciones, es mejor renunciar al derecho a ser mantenidos por la comunidad. Tal decisión debe ser tomada cuando surjan sospechas de que la predicación de la palabra de Dios esconda segundas intenciones.
Es lo que Pablo y Bernabé han hecho: han vivido trabajando con sus manos, continuando a ejercer su propia profesión sin ser una carga para nadie.
Aquellos quienes, como Pablo, estén dispuestos a servir de modo completamente gratuito a su comunidad, ¿qué recompensa deben esperar? No otra que la alegría que nace de la conciencia de haber dedicado la propia vida a los hermanos en pura pérdida, sin esperar nada a cambio (v. 18).
Pablo no ha predicado el evangelio para recabar ganancia alguna, sino para obedecer a un incontenible impulso interior. Convencido de la grandeza y de lo sublime del don recibido, no podía quedárselo solamente para sí mismo, sentía la necesidad de comunicarlo a todos.
Evangelio: Marcos 1,29-39
1,29: Después salió de la sinagoga y con Santiago y Juan se dirigió a casa de Simón y Andrés. 1,30: La suegra de Simón estaba en cama con fiebre, y se lo comunicaron inmediatamente. 1,31: Él se acercó, la tomó de la mano y la levantó. Se le pasó la fiebre y se puso a servirles. 1,32: Al atardecer, cuando se puso el sol, le llevaron toda clase de enfermos y endemoniados. 1,33: Toda la población se agolpaba a la puerta. 1,34: Él sanó a muchos enfermos de dolencias diversas y expulsó muchos demonios, pero a éstos no les permitía hablar, porque sabían quién era él. 1,35: Muy de madrugada se levantó, salió y se dirigió a un lugar despoblado, donde estuvo orando. 1,36: Simón y sus compañeros salieron tras él 1,37: y cuando lo alcanzaron, le dijeron: Todos te están buscando. 1,38: Les respondió: Vámonos de aquí a los pueblos vecinos, para predicar también allí, pues a eso he venido. 1,39: Y fue predicando en las sinagogas de toda Galilea y expulsando demonios. – Palabra del Señor
Cuando se afronta el tema del mal, es indispensable distinguir entre el mal moral y el mal físico. Del primero, el verdadero responsable es el hombre quien es capaz cometer crímenes atroces. No se puede culpar a Dios de Auschwitz, sino a aquellos que llevaron a cabo semejante aberración. El problema, sin embargo, sigue abierto: ¿puede o no puede intervenir Dios en la historia del hombre?, y si puede, ¿por qué no interviene? A este interrogante solo se puede responder eliminando la omnipotencia de la lista de atributos de Dios.
El verdadero enigma del mal lo constituye el que no depende del hombre: los desastres naturales, las enfermedades genéticas, la muerte. ¿Cómo puede Dios permitir estas desventuras? La objeción frecuentemente dirigida al creyente es esta: “Dile a tu Dios que esto es imposible. O él no tiene nada que ver con el mal o es muy malo”. En el evangelio de hoy Jesús se enfrenta al mal. No busca y no da explicaciones teológicas, no se pregunta por qué existen en el mundo desgracias y dolores. Frente a los dramas del mundo es inútil culpar a Dios o a los hombres, lo único que hay que hacer es ponerse junto a quien sufre y luchar con todas las fuerzas contra el mal.
Marcos presenta la intervención liberadora de Jesús en tres pequeñas escenas.
En la primera relata la curación de la suegra de Pedro (vv. 29-31). No viene especificada qué enfermedad la afligía, solo sabemos que estaba en la cama con fiebre. Jesús se le acerca, le toma la mano, la levantó y ella, puesta de pie, se puso a servir.
El hecho es referido de modo muy conciso; es el más breve de los relatos milagrosos de los evangelios, pero todos sus detalles son significativos y han sido señalados por Marcos porque contienen temas para la catequesis.
En primer lugar, está el comportamiento de los discípulos quienes, frente a una dificultad que no saben cómo afrontar, toman la decisión más sensata: le hablan a Jesús. Es lo que los discípulos están invitados a hacer: antes de tratar de resolver un problema, antes de buscar respuestas y proponer soluciones, antes de solucionar situaciones complicadas, deben “hablar a Jesús”, deben dialogar con él. Solo así se está en grado de ver con sus ojos cada enfermedad sea física o moral, de experimentar sus mismos sentimientos frente al dolor, y de efectuar curaciones con la fuerza de su palabra. Quien no inicia con la oración los tentativos de curar las fiebres del hombre, no solo no curará la enfermedad sino que correrá el peligro de ser contagiado.
Después—otro detalle significativo—cuando le hablan de la enferma, Jesús no se aleja, no huye, no se quita de en medio: se le acerca. Tampoco el discípulo puede ignorar las fiebres que impiden vivir a las personas, no puede alejarse fingiendo de no ver, esperando que sean los otros enfrentándose con los problemas. Quien ha asimilado los pensamientos y sentimientos del Maestro, se avecina, se acerca a quien es víctima de situaciones inhumanas.
A esta introducción sigue el detalle más significativo: Jesús toma de la mano a la suegra de Pedro y la levanta. No se trata de un detalle banal de crónica sino de un gesto que simboliza la transmisión de la fuerza divina portadora de salvación. El verbo griego escogido por el evangelista es egéiro, que en el Nuevo Testamento viene usado para indicar la resurrección, el levantarse de la muerte, de una condición de “no vida”. La enferma que yace en el lecho, incapaz de moverse, prisionera de la fiebre, representa a la humanidad entera a la que Jesús se acerca para introducirla en una condición nueva.
El cristiano está llamado a repetir estos gestos del Maestro.
Los relatos de milagros concluyen siempre con una demostración de que la curación ha tenido lugar realmente. Ante la mirado atónita de los presentes, el paralitico toma su camilla y camina; el ciego demuestra ver claramente; la hija de Jairo, vuelta a la vida, comienza a comer. También la suegra de Pedro demuestra estar completamente restablecida: se pone a servir a Jesús y a sus discípulos. Esta es la señal que caracteriza a quien ha sido restablecido por Cristo: el servicio a los hermanos. Hasta que esto no sucede, la curación o no se ha realizado o todavía es incompleta.
De las excavaciones arqueológicas resulta que la casa en que Jesús realizó la curación, fue transformada, desde el primer siglo d.C., en lugar de encuentro de la primera comunidad cristiana. Allí se celebraba la eucaristía, el sacramento que comunica a quien lo recibe con fe la fuerza de levantarse y de mantenerse siempre en pie, a disposición de los hermanos.
En la segunda escena (vv. 32-34) Jesús cura toda clase de enfermedades. Durante el sábado la gente ha respetado la norma que prohibía caminar, cargar pesos, curar enfermos, pero, llegada la tarde—comienzo de un nuevo día—todos comienzan a moverse, llevando a Jesús sus enfermos y colocándolos delante de la puerta de la casa de Pedro (v. 33). Saben que solamente en aquella casa pueden encontrar a Aquel que sana a todos.
Jesús sana a muchos, pero no consiente que se divulgue lo que hace, porque no quiere que surjan equívocos acerca der su identidad y de su misión. No acepta que lo consideren como un santón curandero; su objetivo es mostrar los signos del mundo nuevo e indicar a sus discípulos la tarea a que han sido llamados a desarrollar.
En él es posible contemplar la respuesta de Dios al problema del mal.
Dios no es indiferente al grito de dolor del hombre. El Dios impasible e imperturbable es invento de filósofos; el Dios bíblico pide que “no des las espaldas a los que lloran” (Eclo 7,34) y “alégrense con los que están alegres y lloren con los que lloran” (Rom 12,15) porque también él sufre, llora, se conmueve, prueba los sentimientos de una madre; escucha el lamento y viene a compartir nuestra condición humana, hecha de sufrimiento y dolor, poniéndose a nuestro lado en la lucha contra el mal y enseñándonos a transformarlo en una oportunidad para construir amor.
En la última parte del pasaje evangélico (vv. 35-39) encontramos a Jesús en oración.
En Israel existían diferentes formas de oración. La “comunitaria” estaba constituida, sobre todo, de alabanzas a Dios y comenzaba siempre con la expresión: “Bendito eres tu Señor”; las oraciones “individuales”, por el contrario, se asemejaban mucho más a las nuestras: eran suplicas apasionadas, lamentos, gritos de dolor, peticiones de ayuda. El salterio está lleno de estas oraciones.
En la mañana del sábado Jesús ha rezado en la sinagoga con su comunidad, pero, al día siguiente, cuando todavía estaba oscuro, ha salido de casa y, en la soledad de la montaña, en la quietud de la noche, se ha dirigido al Padre con la oración personal.
Es en este diálogo con el Padre que Jesús recibe la luz para enfrentarse al dolor del hombre.
No todos los problemas de este mundo pueden ser resueltos: “a los pobres los tendrán siempre entre ustedes”, ha dicho un día (Jn 12,8). Un mundo sin dramas, sin inquietudes, sin enfermedades, sin muerte, no es el mundo actual. La oración no es una huida de las dificultades de la vida, no es una ingenua petición de milagros, sino el encuentro con Aquel que ayuda a ver al hombre y sus problemas como él los ve.
No es fácil comprender que el milagro es solo una señal, un dedo apuntando hacia el mundo nuevo. Nos sale más espontaneo interpretarlo como una prueba del poder de Dios o como un intervención suya a favor de algunos privilegiados. También los apóstoles han entendido en este sentido las curaciones hechas por Jesús; no han captado el mensaje. Al amanecer, han seguido sus huellas y después de haberlo encontrado han exclamado: “¡Todos te buscan!” (v. 36).
Buscaban a Jesús, sí, pero por el motivo equivocado: pretendían que continuara haciendo prodigios, lo querían instrumentalizar para ver realizados sus propios sueños de éxito, de popularidad con sus consiguientes ventajas. No aceptaban asumir su responsabilidad, la que les correspondía solamente a ellos llevar a cabo.
Jesús rechaza dejarse envolver en sus proyectos y los invita a “ir a otra parte”, a los demás pueblos para realizar en todas partes lo que ha hecho en Cafarnaúm.
Dios no sustituye al hombre: lo guía con la luz de su palabra, lo acompaña con su presencia, pero quiere que sea el hombre quien actúe y combata el mal.
