La Epifanía de Dios en el pastor que dona la vida
Introducción
No es de extrañar que, incluso en tiempos de crisis religiosa, la mayoría de la gente siga creyendo en Dios, pero, cuando se trata verificar su identidad, frecuentemente se trata de un dios (con minúscula) muy diferente del que se revela en Jesús. Es un dios que se adapta a la justicia del hombre, premia y castiga en base a los méritos, se complace en el culto, derrama bendiciones sobre sus devotos, prohíbe el adulterio, pero aprueba la acumulación de bienes y su libre gestión, es más, se convierte, a veces, en socio de los negocios de los hombres. Es un dios que permite matar en legítima defensa y se presenta, sobre todo, como grande, infinito, omnipotente, capaz de hacerse respetar.
Este dios, tan razonable, que ha encontrado aceptación también en algunos catecismos católicos, no es difícil de ser aceptado.
Un día, sin embargo, en Jesús, el verdadero Dios se ha presentado a los hombres completamente diferente: frecuentaba a los pecadores, se mezclaba con los excluidos, se ha dejado escupir en el rostro sin reaccionar, ha amado a quien lo clavaba en la cruz, no era ni omnipotente ni infinito.
Frente a este Dios débil, incapaz de defenderse, ha vacilado la fe de todos y cuando Pedro ha jurado no conocerlo (cf. Mc 14,71) ha hablado –creo– en nombre también de la gran mayoría de los cristianos.
Creer en un Dios así, es difícil: significa buscar la propia gloria en hacerse pequeños por amor.

Primera Lectura: Hechos 4,8-12
4,8: En aquellos días Pedro, lleno de Espíritu Santo, respondió: Jefes del pueblo y ancianos: 4,9: por haber hecho un bien a un enfermo, hoy nos interrogan para saber de qué manera ha sido sanado este hombre. 4,10: Conste a todos ustedes y a todo el pueblo de Israel que este hombre ha sido sanado en nombre de Jesucristo el Nazareno, a quien ustedes crucificaron y Dios resucitó de la muerte. Gracias a él, este hombre está sano en presencia de ustedes. 4,11: Él es la piedra desechada por ustedes, los arquitectos, que se ha convertido en piedra angular. 4,12: En ningún otro se encuentra la salvación; ya que no se ha dado a los hombres sobre la tierra otro Nombre por el cual podamos ser salvados. – Palabra de Dios
He aquí un nuevo discurso de Pedro: es el tercero de los ocho que se le son atribuidos en el libro de los Hechos. Fue pronunciado poco después del que fue propuesto el Domingo pasado. El contexto en el que se coloca es el mismo: Pedro y Juan habían curado a un tullido de nacimiento junto a la puerta “Hermosa” del templo y habían declarado ante el pueblo estupefacto: “éste que Uds. conocen y están viendo ha recibido de ese Nombre vigor, y la fe que proviene de él le ha dado salud completa en presencia de todos ustedes” (Hch 3,16). Cuando todavía estaban hablando llegaron los jefes: “irritados porque instruían al pueblo anunciando la resurrección de la muerte por medio de Jesús. Los detuvieron y, como ya era tarde, los metieron en prisión. Al día siguiente…hicieron comparecer a los apóstoles y los interrogaban: ¿Con qué poder o en nombre de quién han hecho eso?” (Hch 4,1-7).
La lectura de hoy comienza con la respuesta de Pedro a la pregunta que los jefes del pueblo le han dirigido. La curación –declara– ha sido realizada “en el nombre de Jesús, a quien ustedes crucificaron y Dios resucitó de la muerte” (vv. 8-10).
El centro del discurso (v. 11) lo ocupa la cita del Salmo 118: “La piedra que rechazaron los albañiles es ahora la piedra angular” (Sal 118,22). Pedro interpreta esta cita como una parábola lo que le ocurrió a Jesús y, de nuevo, contrapone de manera contundente la obra de los hombres a la acción de Dios. Compara los miembros del Sanedrín a constructores quienes, disponiendo de una piedra sólida, pero que no se adecuaba a sus proyectos, y temiendo que desestabilizaría todo su “edificio”, la rechazaron, arrojándola lejos. Dios que, por el contrario, la consideraba absolutamente preciosa, ha ido a recuperarla y la ha colocado como fundamento de su nueva construcción.
La piedra es Jesús. Con la novedad de su mensaje, ha invertido el orden constituido, ha puesto en peligro al “santuario y a la nación” (cf. Jn 11,48). Era, pues, intolerable que Jesús, un laico, privado de autoridad, continuara siendo una amenaza para la institución religiosa. Caifás, con mucha lógica, concluyó: “¿No ven que es mejor que uno solo muera por el pueblo y no que muera toda la nación?” (Jn 11,49).
Dios pensaba diferentemente de aquellos que se arrogaban el derecho de representarlo y hablar en su nombre en la tierra. Para Dios, Jesús era el siervo fiel y, por lo tanto, en el día de Pascua fue a sacarlo del sepulcro, lo glorificó y lo puso como cimiento del nuevo templo.
Concluyendo su discurso (v. 12), Pedro afirma que en ningún otro nombre hay salvación. Jesús es el único Salvador. Sólo quien construye su vida sobre él y sobre su palabra, puede estar seguro de edificar sobre un fundamento sólido y no temerá que la llegada de nuevas doctrinas, nuevas religiones, nuevas ideologías, nuevos humanismos, nuevos descubrimientos científicos, puedan un día hacer aparecer alguna fragilidad.
Segunda Lectura: 1 Juan 3,1-2
Queridos hermanos: 3,1: Miren qué amor tan grande nos ha mostrado el Padre: que nos llamamos hijos de Dios y realmente lo somos. Por eso el mundo no nos reconoce, porque no lo reconoce a él. 3,2: Queridos, ya somos hijos de Dios, pero todavía no se ha manifestado lo que seremos. Sabemos que, cuando aparezca, seremos semejantes a él y lo veremos como él es. – Palabra de Dios
La vida de Dios que el cristiano recibe en el bautismo es una realidad espiritual misteriosa. Hablando con Nicodemo, Jesús la comparó al viento que nadie sabe de dónde viene ni a dónde va; existe y su presencia no pasa desapercibida, ya que produce efectos inequívocos que todos pueden constatar pero que no son visibles a los ojos (cf. Jn 3,8).
La primera afirmación del pasaje que nos viene propuesto hoy, es un llamamiento a la gratuidad del don de esta vida divina. La palabra de Dios es siempre eficaz: si Él llama a alguien “su hijo”, éste se convierte realmente en hijo suyo.
La filiación implica, en el lenguaje bíblico, la participación en la vida de quien nos ha generado. “Adán –recuerda el Génesis– engendró a su imagen y semejanza y llamó a su hijo Set” (Gn 5,3) quien, por haber recibido la vida de Adán, era semejante a su padre, llevaba grabadas sus mismas características. De la misma manera el cristiano es, en el mundo, una presencia de la divinidad y, como todo hijo, reproduce los rasgos del Padre. Por eso, afirma Juan refiriéndose a los creyentes, “el mundo no nos reconoce porque no lo reconoce a él” (v. 1). No es de extrañar, pues, que el cristiano no sea comprendido.
La condición actual no es, sin embargo, definitiva. Un velo, constituido por el hecho de que aun vivamos en este mundo, impide darnos cuenta de lo que realmente somos. Un día, este velo será quitado y veremos a Dios tal como es; entonces, entenderemos también lo que ya éramos hoy (v. 2).
Ésta es la única perspectiva cristiana para considerar la muerte: no como el final de la vida, sino como el comienzo de la segunda parte, la mejor, la única en que los siervos de Dios y del Cordero “verán su rostro, y llevaran en la frente su nombre. No habrá más noche. No les hará falta luz de lámpara, ni de luz del sol, porque los ilumina el Señor Dios” (Ap 22,3-5).
Evangelio: Juan 10,11-18
En aquel tiempo, dijo Jesús: 10,11: Yo soy el buen pastor. El buen pastor da su vida por las ovejas. 10,12: El asalariado, que no es pastor ni dueño de las ovejas, cuando ve venir al lobo, escapa abandonando las ovejas, y el lobo las arrebata y dispersa. 10,13: Como es asalariado no le importan las ovejas. 10,14: Yo soy el buen pastor: conozco a mis ovejas y ellas me conocen a mí, 10,15: como el Padre me conoce y yo conozco al Padre; y doy la vida por las ovejas. 10,16: Tengo otras ovejas que no pertenecen a este corral; a ésas tengo que guiarlas para que escuchen mi voz y se forme un solo rebaño con un solo pastor. 10,17: Por eso me ama el Padre, porque doy la vida, para después recobrarla. 10,18: Nadie me la quita, yo la doy voluntariamente. Tengo poder para darla y para después recobrarla. Éste es el encargo que he recibido del Padre. – Palabra del Señor
Incluso después de haberse instalado en la tierra de Canaán y convertido en una nación de agricultores, Israel siempre ha conservado una gran nostalgia por la vida nómada de los pastores y nunca ha renunciado a criar ovejas y cabras. La sabiduría del beduino, que prefiere su rebaño a joyas y tesoros, se refleja por la exhortación del Libro de los Proverbios: “Observa bien el aspecto de tus ovejas y fíjate en tus rebaños; porque la fortuna no dura siempre… Tus ovejas te dan vestido, tus cabritos dinero para comprarte un campo, las cabras leche para alimentarte tú y tu familia” (Pro 27,23-27).
El hecho de pasar mucho tiempo en lugares solitarios con el rebaño hacía que, entre el pastor y sus ovejas, se estableciera una relación afectiva. El pastor llamaba a cada oveja por su nombre y ésta reconocía su voz. Los mayores peligros para el rebaño eran los animales salvajes que, en los tiempos bíblicos, poblaban el valle del Jordán: hienas y chacales, leones y osos, contra los que los pastores estaban dispuestos a luchar armados con honda y un robusto bastón reforzado con trozos de pedernal incrustados en la punta.
Esta era la realidad social; no es de extrañar, por tanto, que aparezca repetidamente en la Biblia imagen del pastor. David es llamado por Dios quien lo sacó de los “apriscos del rebano” para pastorear a los israelitas y “los pastoreó con corazón integro, y los guio con mano experta” (Sal 78,70-72). Los reyes de Israel son comparados frecuentemente con pastores perversos quienes, en lugar de alimentar el rebaño, se pastorean a sí mismos, explotan, dispersan y matan (cf. Ez 34).
Dios es representado como viñador y agricultor (cf. Is 27,3; Sal 65) pero, sobre todo, como un pastor que guía, protege, alimenta a su pueblo (cf. Sal 80,2; 23), “toma en brazo a los corderos y hace recostar a las madres” (Is 40,11). Cuida a Israel que ha sido llevado a la ruina por soberanos indignos y promete: “Yo mismo reuniré el resto de mis ovejas en todos los países adonde las expulsé, las volveré a traer a sus pastos, para que crezcan y se multipliquen. Les daré pastores que las pastoreen: no temerán, ni se espantarán, ni se perderán. Miren que llegan días en que daré a David un retoño legítimo. Reinará como rey prudente, y administrará la justicia y el derecho en el país” (Jer 23,3-5). Es el anuncio del Mesías que será un verdadero pastor, un rey según el corazón de Dios.
La afirmación de Jesús: “Yo soy el buen pastor”, con que comienza el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy, se refiere de manera explícita, al cumplimiento de esta profecía. Él es el pastor enviado por Dios para cuidar del pueblo que se encuentra como un rebaño en desbandada (cf. Mc 6,34).
Una primera explicación nos viene dada por la alegoría: “El buen pastor ofrece la vida por las ovejas” (v. 11).
Llevamos bien grabada en nuestra mente la parábola de la oveja perdida, referida por Mateo y Lucas (cf. Mt 18,12-14; Lc 15,4-7), y nos resulta fácil, por tanto, asociar la imagen del “buen pastor” a Jesús, que con dulzura e inmensa compasión, va en busca de quien ha errado en la vida.
En el evangelio de hoy, sin embargo, el “Buen Pastor” no es quien tiernamente acaricia a la oveja herida, sino el luchador que, a costa de su propia vida, se enfrenta a cualquiera que ponga en peligro el rebaño. La referencia no es a la escena bucólica del salmo: “En verdes praderas me hace reposar” (Sal 23,2), sino más bien a la figura de David quien afirmó ser pastor de ovejas y “si viene un león o un oso y se lleva una oveja del rebaño, salgo tras él, lo apaleo y se la quito de la boca” (1 Sam 17,34-35).
Es esta la característica del hombre fuerte e impávido que lucha contra bandidos y contra las bestias feroces que viene retomada en el Evangelio de hoy para presentar a Jesús.
La calificación de “bueno” no se refiere a sentimientos, no significa tierno, amable, sino “verdadero”, “auténtico”, “valiente”. Jesús es el verdadero pastor tan apasionadamente ligado a sus ovejas que está dispuesto a sacrificar su vida por ellas.
Para dar mayor énfasis a la imagen, Jesús la contrapone a la figura del mercenario (vv. 12-13).
Ordinariamente, los habitantes de los pueblos, no pudiendo conducir a pastar cada uno sus propias ovejas y cabras, recurrían a un asalariado quien cuidaba las ovejas de todos. Una legislación rigurosa fijaba sus obligaciones: tenía que hacer frente a un lobo, a dos perros, a un animal pequeño, pero podía huir de un león, de un leopardo, de un oso o de un ladrón. En su contrato no figuraba ninguna cláusula de tener que sacrificar la vida por las ovejas. No se sentía afectivamente ligado al rebaño y, ante el peligro, huía; no le interesaba la suerte de las ovejas, sino el salario.
La imagen del “Buen Pastor” no se refiere solamente a aquellos que desarrollan en la iglesia el ministerio de la autoridad, sino a todo cristiano. Cada discípulo debe tener un corazón de verdadero pastor, debe cultivar la generosidad incondicional del Maestro hacia todo hombre.
Tiene corazón de mercenario quien se reduce a cumplir las obligaciones mínimas establecidas en el contrato, quién está pronto a discutir sobre los deberes más o menos eludibles, quien es fiel a las disposiciones de la ley solamente para obtener una recompensa o evitar un castigo.
Quién tiene un corazón como Jesús no es un calculador, no se pregunta hasta dónde llegan sus derechos y dónde terminan sus deberes, qué establecen las normas y cuáles son los acuerdos estipulados con el propietario. Sigue una única ley: el amor “loco” por la persona humana. El amor no conoce confines, no se detiene ante ningún obstáculo, ningún riesgo, ningún sacrificio. Quién no ama como Cristo, no entenderá nunca sus opciones y propuestas; lo tendrá por soñador, iluso, imprudente, temerario.
En la segunda parte del pasaje (vv. 14-16) Jesús repite la afirmación “Yo soy el buen pastor” para agregar una segunda característica. El verdadero pastor es el que conoce, una por una sus ovejas y es conocido por ellas.
En la Biblia, el verbo conocer no tiene sólo el significado de un aprendizaje logrado; cuando hace referencia a la relación entre personas, conocer implica una profunda experiencia, indica la plena participación en el amor. Es un asunto más del corazón que de la mente.
Así debe ser la relación con el Señor. Escribiendo a los Gálatas, Pablo les recuerda que en un tiempo no conocían a Dios, sino que estaban sometidos a los ídolos, y continúa: “ahora que reconocen a Dios mejor, que él les reconoce, ¿por qué se vuelven de nuevo a esos débiles e indignantes poderes?” (Gal 4,9). Si entran en comunión de vida con él, como la esposa con el esposo, ¿cómo pueden alejarse de su amor?
Buen Pastor es Jesús y todo aquel que se deja envolver en el amor hacia Dios y hacia los hermanos con su mismo apasionamiento.
Parece aún lejano el día en que toda la humanidad realice esta experiencia de reciproco conocimiento con Dios. Jesús sabe que todavía hay muchas personas que no han aceptado su amor: “También tengo otras ovejas que no son de este redil”, pero un pastor verdadero como él no se resigna nunca a perder una sola de sus ovejas, por eso asegura: “tengo otras ovejas que no pertenecen a este corral; a esas tengo que guiarlas para que escuchen mi voz, y se forme un solo rebaño con un solo pastor” (v. 16).
Si se toma en serio esta afirmación, se hace difícil comprender que alguien pueda sustraerse al amor del único pastor.
En la última parte (vv. 17-18) se desarrolla el tema de la libertad, presente en esta dinámica de amor. Donde hay coacción y miedo no hay amor, y el miedo a Dios es ya un pecado.
Jesús ha mostrado su amor porque se ha entregado libremente: “Nadie me quita la vida, yo la doy voluntariamente. Tengo poder para darla y después para recobrarla” (v. 18).
“Tomarla de nuevo” significa que el destino de aquel que da la vida no es la muerte, sino la plenitud de la vida. Hacer de ésta un don, es el único modo de “recuperarla”. Es el mismo principio que, con otra imagen, será retomado más tarde: “Si el grano de trigo caído en tierra no muere, queda solo; pero si muere, da mucho fruto. El que se aferra a la vida, la pierde, y el que desprecia la vida en este mundo, la conservará para una vida eterna” (Jn 12,24-25).
