6º Domingo de Pascua – 6 de mayo de 2018 – Año B
Somos amados por eso amamos
Introducción
Baal, el gran dios adorado en todo el antiguo Medio Oriente, era el señor de la lluvia, el “caballero de las nubes” de quien dependía de la fertilidad de los campos y de los animales. Ante el quemaron incienso e doblaron las rodillas, tambien los israelitas, provocando el celo del Señor y el desprecio de los profetas. En la Biblia, su nombre aparece frecuentemente acompañado del nombre de una localidad –Safon Baal, Baal-peor, Baal-gad– correspondiente al monte en que surgía el santuario donde era venerado. También las otras divinidades de toda aquella área geográfica se identificaban con el nombre del lugar donde los devotos iban a rendirles culto.
En este ambiente cultural, sorprende que los israelitas concibieran su Dios como aquel que une el propio nombre no a un lugar, sino a personas: “Yo soy el Dios de tu padre –dijo a Moisés– el Dios de Abrahán, el Dios de Isaac y el Dios de Jacob” (Ex 3,6); “No temas, –repite frecuentemente a su pueblo– no te angusties, que yo soy tu Dios” (Is 41,10).
Israel había comprendido que el Señor unía su corazón al hombre, que cuidaba de su pueblo, sin embargo lo imaginaba también pronto a castigar: “castiga la culpa de los padres y los hijos, nietos y bisnietos” (Ex 34,7). Había contemplado la obra de sus manos, pero que aún no había visto la cara de Emmanuel –Dios con nosotros– y, sobre todo, aún no había descubierto su corazón.
El discípulo que, durante la cena reclinó la cabeza sobre el pecho del Señor, nos ha revelado que Dios es amor, sólo amor y que todo el que ama ha nacido de él.

Primera Lectura: Hechos 10,25-27.34-35.44-48
10,25: Cuando Pedro entró, Cornelio le salió al encuentro, y se arrodilló a sus pies en señal de veneración. 10.26: Pedro lo levantó y le dijo: —Levántate, que yo no soy más que un hombre. 10,34: Pedro tomó la palabra: —Verdaderamente reconozco que Dios no hace diferencia entre las personas sino que, 10,35: acepta a quien lo respeta y practica la justicia, de cualquier nación que sea. 10,44: Pedro no había acabado de hablar, cuando el Espíritu Santo bajó sobre todos los oyentes. 10,45: Los creyentes convertidos del judaísmo se asombraban al ver que el don del Espíritu Santo también se concedía a los paganos; 10,46: ya que los oían hablar en diversas lenguas y proclamar la grandeza de Dios. Entonces intervino Pedro: 10,47:—¿Puede alguien impedir que se bauticen con agua los que han recibido el Espíritu Santo igual que nosotros? 10,48: Y ordenó que los bautizaran invocando el nombre de Jesucristo. Ellos le rogaron que se quedaran unos días. – Palabra de Dios
El hecho ocurrió en Cesarea, la espléndida capital fundada por Herodes el Grande.
En esta ciudad residía el procurador romano y una fuerte guarnición militar. Uno de los comandantes de la guarnición se llamaba Cornelio, centurión, como su colega de Cafarnaún (cf. Lc 7,1-10), profesaba un profundo respeto por la religión de Israel. Rezaba, repartía limosnas, amaba al pueblo de Israel, pero esto todavía no era suficiente para estar asociado a los herederos de las promesas hechas a Abrahán. No se había sido sometido a la circuncisión y por tanto permanecía impuro, inaccesibles a los israelitas piadosos y Pedro era uno de estos.
Pedro era un tradicionalista, orgulloso de su propia elección (cf. Dt 7,6; 26,19), siempre había evitado el contacto con extranjeros para no ser inducido a la idolatría. Había defendido su identidad religiosa, teniendo presente que una nítida línea de demarcación le separaba de los paganos. Había observado con escrúpulo las prohibiciones y prescripciones que los rabinos le habían enseñado pero, transcurridos algunos años después de Pentecostés, los acontecimientos comenzaron a hacer vacilar sus certezas. Una duda, cada vez más insistente, le atormentaba: la discriminaciones, impuestas en nombre de Dios, ¿eran realmente queridas por Él?
No sabía qué hacer, se tambaleaba en la oscuridad. Decidir es siempre cortar y, en su caso, implicaba o bien cortar con el pasado, con su mentalidad, con su cultura y religiosidad, o bien cortar con la desbordante novedad del Espíritu que lo enviaba allí, donde una familia le esperaba en oración.
Pedro, que no era el tipo dado a la transgresión, dudaba, pero al final cedió y, con otros seis discípulos, se dirigió a Cesarea.
Le esperaba Cornelio que salió a su encuentro y le dio la bienvenida arrojándose a sus pies para adorarlo. Era la práctica habitual con la que se recibía a un “hombre de Dios” (cf. 2 Re 4:27), pero Pedro reaccionó: “!Levántate también yo soy un hombre!” (v. 26). Rechazó el gesto aunque si se trataba de un simple cumplido, de una manifestación normal de respeto; el apóstol recordaba muy bien con qué insistencia y claridad el Maestro había condenado la búsqueda de honores y la manía de ocupar los primeros puestos (cf. Lc 22,24-27) y no quería que semejantes ceremonias, tanto apreciadas los escribas, (cf. Mc 12,38-39), fueran introducidas en la comunidad cristiana.
Después continuó: “verdaderamente, reconozco que Dios no hace diferencia entre las personas” (v. 34). No lo tenia todo claro, pero comenzaba a comprender una verdad fundamental introducida por Cristo en el mundo: no existen dos categorías de personas, las puras e impuras, para Dios todos los hombres son puros, porque todos son sus criaturas, todos son sus hijos.
Pedro no era responsable de su estrechez mental , sino solo la víctima de una concepción atávica que le llevaba a pensar, como a todo judío observante, de modo exclusivista. El Espíritu se encargó de desmantelar los esquemas dictados por presuntos privilegios raciales y le mostró que podía tratar con paganos aun antes que les fuera administrado el bautismo. Con su dinamismo irresistible, el Espíritu daba testimonio de la libertad del amor incondicional de Dios que llega a todas las personas, incluso a los que no pertenecen a la iglesia-institución.
El abrazo entre el grupo de judíos, llegados a Cesarea junto con Pedro, y los paganos de la familia de Cornelio, representa el encuentro de dos pueblos que, hasta aquel momento habían cultivado prejuicios recíprocos, y es la señal del reino, del nuevo mundo en que toda discriminación desaparecerá completamente.
Segunda Lectura: 1 Juan 4,7-10
4,7: Queridos hermanos, amémonos unos a otros, porque el amor viene de Dios; todo el que ama es hijo de Dios y conoce a Dios. 4,8: Quien no ama no ha conocido a Dios, ya que Dios es amor. 4,9: Dios ha demostrado el amor que nos tiene enviando al mundo a su Hijo único para que vivamos gracias a él. 4,10: En esto consiste el amor: no en que nosotros hayamos amado a Dios, sino en que él nos amó y envió a su Hijo para que, ofreciéndose en sacrificio, nuestros pecados quedaran perdonados. – Palabra de Dios
En una acalorada discusión, referida por Juan, a los judíos que afirmaban: “Nuestro padre es Abrahán”, Jesús responde: “Si fueran hijos de Abrahán, ¡harían las obras de Abrahán! Pero ustedes obran como su padre”. Ellos reaccionaron: “!tenemos un solo Padre, que es Dios!” Y Jesús replicó: “el padre de ustedes es el Diablo, y ustedes quieren cumplir los deseos de su padre. El era homicida desde el principio” (Jn 8,38-44).
Sólo Jesús podía declarar ser el unigénito de Dios, sólo en él se han manifestado en plenitud las obras de su Padre (cf. Jn 9,3), sin embargo, son llamados y realmente son hijos de Dios, todos aquellos en cuyo rostro se refleja la semejanza del Padre Celestial: “los que trabajan por la paz” (Mt 5,9), los que aman a sus enemigos y rezan por sus perseguidores (cf. Mt 5,44), aquellos que se comportan como padres para los huérfanos y las viudas (cf. Eclo 4,10). Se trata de una semejanza de la que, aun el santo más grande, permanecerá siempre infinitamente alejado, pero hacia la cual debe continuamente orientarse nuestra vida, como exhorta Pablo: “como hijos queridos de Dios traten de imitarlo” (Ef 5,1).
En la primera parte del pasaje de hoy (vv. 7-8), Juan retoma esta imagen de la filiación para indicar cuál es el fundamento, el origen del mandamiento del amor. No deriva de una disposición externa dada por Dios, sino que es la manifestación necesaria de una nueva realidad, presente en lo más íntimo del hombre: la semilla divina que Dios ha depositado en él.
¿Quién es Dios? No sabemos ni siquiera quiénes somos nosotros, ¿cómo podríamos definir a Dios? Juan no da una definición, pero explica cómo Dios se manifiesta: no como legislador y juez, como los rabinos creían, sino como amor. “Amémonos los unos a los otros –dice– porque el amor viene de Dios: Todo el que ama ha nacido de Dios y conoce a Dios y quien no ama no ha conocido a Dios, porque Dios es amor”.
El amor es la vida de Dios, y es este amor que él comunica a sus hijos. El que ama, aunque no pertenezca a la institución eclesial, tiene en sí la vida de Dios, es su hijo.
En la segunda parte del pasaje (vv. 9-10) explica lo que significa amar. El amor de Dios se ha manifestado dándonos lo que él tenia de más precioso, su Unigénito; lo ha enviado al mundo, no como premio por nuestras buenas obras, sino como “víctima de expiación por nuestros pecados”. Nos ha amado, no porque eramos buenos, sino que nos ha hecho buenos amándonos gratuitamente: “cuando todavía eramos débiles, en el tiempo señalado, Cristo murió por los pecadores” (Rom 5,6).
Es este amor generoso y desinteresado que se manifiesta también en los hijos de Dios. No se recibe la filiación divina como recompensa porque se ama. Es la presencia de este amor que revela quién se ha convertido en hijo de Dios.
Evangelio: Juan 15,9-17
En aquel tiempo dijo Jesús a sus discípulos: 15,9: Como el Padre me amó así yo los he amado: permanezcan en mi amor. 15,10: Si cumplen mis mandamientos, permanecerán en mi amor; lo mismo que yo he cumplido los mandamientos de mi Padre y permanezco en su amor. 15,11: Les he dicho esto para que participen de mi alegría y sean plenamente felices. 15,12: Éste es mi mandamiento: que se amen unos a otros como yo los he amado. 15,13: Nadie tiene amor más grande que el que da la vida por los amigos. 15,14: Ustedes son mis amigos, si hacen lo que yo les mando. 15,15: Ya no los llamo sirvientes, porque el sirviente no sabe lo que hace su señor. A ustedes los he llamado amigos porque les he dado a conocer todo lo que escuché a mi Padre. 15,16: No me eligieron ustedes a mí; yo los elegí a ustedes y los destiné para que vayan y den fruto, un fruto que permanezca; así, lo que pidan al Padre en mi nombre él se lo concederá. 15,17: Esto es lo que les mando, que se amen unos a otros. – Palabra del Señor
El evangelio de hoy es la continuación del proclamado el domingo pasado. Después de haber introducido la alegoría de la vid y los sarmientos, Jesús explica lo que sucede en aquellos que permanecen unidos a él.
Hay infatuaciones fugaces por Cristo, dictadas por la emoción y o el entusiasmo momentáneo, y existe una adhesión duradera que ninguna fuerza adversa es capaz de romper. Esta adhesión firme y decidida viene expresada por Juan con el verbo permanecer (menein en griego), que aparece hasta siete veces en la parábola de la vid y otras tres al comienzo de nuestro pasaje de hoy (vv. 9-10).
Jesús permanece en el amor del Padre, porque siempre está unido a él, le es fiel y hace siempre “lo que le agrada” (Jn 8,29); los discípulos pueden llegar a ser en el mundo un reflejo de esta unión, sólo si permanecen en su amor y guardan sus mandamientos: “Si alguien me ama, cumplirá mi palabra, mi Padre lo amará, vendremos a él y habitaremos en él” (Jn 14,23).
En estas palabras e imágenes llenas de misticismo, se percibe, nítida, la referencia a la Eucaristía, el sacramento donde se celebra y realiza esta unión íntima con el Señor: “Quien come mi carne y bebe mi sangre abita en mí y yo en él” (Jn 6,56).
He aquí la razón por la que antes de acercarnos a la comunión, “debe uno preguntarse” si realmente está decidido a permanecer en el Señor, de lo contrario su gesto es una mentira y “come y bebe su propia condena” (cf. 1 Cor 11,28-29).
En estos primeros versículos (vv. 9-10), Jesús no presenta su amor como modelo a imitar, sino como una vida que continúa en los discípulos, los cuales, en el bautismo, han sido unidos a él, convirtiéndose en sus miembros. De este modo, es Él quien actúa en ellos. En los discípulos es Cristo el que anuncia la buena noticia al pobre, el que ama, sana, consuela, enjuga las lágrimas de la viuda y del huérfano. Fruto de esta unión con Cristo y con el Padre y la observancia de sus mandamientos, es la plenitud de la alegría (v. 11).
Siete veces en el Evangelio de Juan se utiliza la palabra alegría. El primero a utilizarla es el Bautista, cuando afirma: “El amigo del novio que esta escuchando se alegra de oír la voz del novio. Por eso mi gozo es perfecto” (Jn 3:29); después es siempre Jesús quien, con insistencia, repite a los discípulos la promesa de su verdadera alegría.
Todavía está arraigada de muchos la creencia de que permanecer en Cristo equivale a renunciar a lo que nos hace felices. No es así. Jesús nos pone en guardia, es cierto, contra las alegrías vanas e ilusorias que nacen del egoísmo, de la búsqueda del placer a cualquier precio, pero nos pone ante los ojos la alegría auténtica, la que surge de la unión con Él y con el Padre. Esta alegría, la única verdadera y duradera, no se puede obtener sino pasando a través del dolor: “Ustedes lloraran y se lamentaran, mientras el mundo se divierte; estarán tristes, pero esa tristeza se convertirá en gozo” (Jn 16,20). Intentar caminos alternativos, escoger sendas fáciles y amplias significa perderse, alejarse de la meta.
Después de haber hablado de sus mandamientos como si fueran muchos, Jesús declara: “Este es mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros como yo los he amado”, como si se tratara de un solo (v. 12).
Es cierto que los mandamientos son muchos, pero sólo son aclaraciones de un solo mandamiento, el que Jesús ha practicado de manera perfecta: el amor a la persona humana. Es el bien al hombre que debe ser el punto de referencia de las todas las opciones morales, disposiciones, leyes, porque es la única manera que tenemos para mostrar nuestro amor a Dios: “Quién no ama al hermano a quien ve, no puede amar a Dios a quien no ve” (1 Jn 4,20) y quien ama al hermano ha cumplido toda la ley, “porque toda la ley se cumple con un precepto: amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo” (Gál 5,14; cf. Rom 13,8-10).
Durante la última cena, después de lavar los pies a sus discípulos, dijo: “Les doy un mandamiento nuevo, que se amen unos a otros como yo los he amado: ámense así unos a otros. En eso conocerán todos que son mis discípulos, en el amor que se tengan unos a otros” (Jn 13,34-35).
Comparando las dos fórmulas con que viene presentado el único mandamiento, se nota una ligera pero significativa diferencia. Antes, el mandamiento era “nuevo”, ahora es “el suyo”, casi como si hubiera dejado de ser “nuevo”.
Hay una razón por la cual se introduce el cambio. El evangelista escribe después de los acontecimientos de Pascua, cuando Jesús ya ha pasado de este mundo al Padre. Él ha sido el primero en practicar el mandamiento nuevo: ha amado hasta el don total de sí mismo. He aquí la razón por la que el mandamiento no es ya nuevo, sino que se ha convertido en suyo, porque él mismo lo ha practicado. La medida del amor al prójimo ha dejado de ser la indicada en el Antiguo Testamento: como a ti mismo (cf. Lev 19:18), sino: como yo les he amado y, con esta expresión, Jesús se refiere al amor inmenso que él ha manifestado en la cruz.
Permanece en él sólo quien está siempre dispuesto a “dar la vida”, porque “nadie tiene amor más grande que el que da la vida por los amigos” (v. 13) y “Cristo los amó hasta entregarse por ustedes” (Ef 5,2).
Su mandamiento no pretende ser una ley exigente, precisa y bien definida en todos sus detalles. Se trata de una orientación de la vida que, en sus consecuencias prácticas, debe ser establecida y actuada en todo momento; exige constante atención a las necesidades del hermano, pide creatividad, discernimiento y el coraje de tomar decisiones aun a riesgo de equivocarse.
Jesús no llama a sus discípulos siervos, sino amigos (vv. 14-15). No resulta clara de manera inmediata esta afirmación porque en la Biblia, “siervo de Dios” es un título honorífico que se atribuye a personas como Abrahán, Moisés, David, los profetas. También el anciano Simeón, Pablo, Pedro y muchos otros se califican como “siervos” y María se define “la sierva del Señor” (cf. Lc 1,38). Jesús, especialmente, viene referido por el Padre con las palabras: “Miren a mi siervo” (Mt 12,18) y, en el celebre himno de la Carta a los Filipenses, Pablo recuerda que él “tomó la condición de esclavo” (Phil 2,7). De aquí la exhortación a convertirnos en siervos los unos de los otros (cf. Mc 9,35).
Jesús da la razón por la que no llama siervos a sus discípulos, sino amigos.
El siervo sólo está comprometido exteriormente en el proyecto de su dueño, es un ejecutor de las órdenes y tareas que le son encomendadas. El amigo, por el contrario, es un confidente, es aquel con el que tiene una comunión de vida, de proyectos y de intenciones. El amigo es feliz cuando puede hacer un favor a un ser querido, no le oculta nada, no pide una compensación por el servicio prestado.
Jesús llama “amigos” a sus discípulos porque a ellos les ha revelado el Proyecto del Padre (v. 15) y los ha llamado a colaborar con él en su realización.
La comunidad cristiana se compone de “amigos”, se excluyen por tanto las relaciones superior-súbdito; dueño-esclavo; maestro-discípulo; todos sus miembros están en el mismo nivel y gozan de igual dignidad.
Después de haber lavado los pies a los apóstoles, Jesús admite ser “maestro y señor”, pero da un significado completamente nuevo a estos títulos: “el primero”, aquel que es “grande” en la comunidad, es el que lava los pies al último. No hay lugar para los que, en lugar de servir, aspiran a posiciones de prestigio y honor.
Todo el pasaje es un himno al amor. Pero, ¿quién es el amado?
La exhortación está claramente dirigida sólo a los discípulos y el amor parece estar restringido a su grupo. Uno se pregunta, entonces, por qué Jesús no ha pedido un amor universal, extendido a todos, incluso a los enemigos, como lo hizo en el Sermón de la montaña (cf. Mt 5,44).
Es cierto que aquí Jesús se dirige directamente solo a los miembros de la comunidad cristiana y sólo a ellos les recomienda estar unidos y amarse recíprocamente. Es una limitación, pero existe un motivo: antes de hablar de amor y de paz a los demás, es necesario cultivar el amor y la paz en la iglesia.
Sólo una comunidad cuyos miembros hacen una experiencia viva y profunda de la acogida, de tolerancia, de perdón, de servicio mutuo y compartir los bienes, puede anunciar al mundo la fraternidad y la paz.
